Anna and Serah B’not Asher: Similar Roles

This morning, for the first time I became aware of the Prophetess Anna; (Kanna).   Her small role is nevertheless an important one.  However, I confess, to having read it without seeing it many times.  It follows the story of Simeon, an old man who had the expectation that he would live to see the coming of Messiah.  The story of Anna, following his story, appears as just an afterthought, one extra witness trotted out.  But, she is actually more interesting than is Simeon.  Luke 2: 36 And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, (Peniel) of the tribe of Asher: she was of a great age, and had lived with an husband seven years from her virginity;

37 And she was a widow of about fourscore and four years, which departed not from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day.

38 And she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem.

For some reason, she seems to have blurred into the background, following a similar story of another elderly witness who had been expecting to see the Messiah before he died.  25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout. He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was on him. 26 It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. 27 Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required, 28 Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying:

29 “Sovereign Lord, as you have promised,
    you may now dismiss your servant in peace.

30 For my eyes have seen your salvation,

31 which you have prepared in the sight of all nations:

32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles,
    and the glory of your people Israel.”

33 The child’s father and mother marveled at what was said about him. 34 Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother: “This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, 35 so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too.”
Both of these brief stories serve to provide support from elderly witnesses that the One for whom they waited had indeed come.
This reminded me of one more story.  This woman, like Anna, also was elderly and also from the Tribe of Asher.

THE LIST OF THOSE WHO WENT DOWN TO EGYPT: IN Gen. 46:5 Then Jacob left Beersheba, and Israel’s sons took their father Jacob and their children and their wives in the carts that Pharaoh had sent to transport him. 6 So Jacob and all his offspring went to Egypt, taking with them their livestock and the possessions they had acquired in Canaan. 7 Jacob brought with him to Egypt his sons and grandsons and his daughters and granddaughters—all his offspring.

17 The sons of Asher:

Imnah, Ishvah, Ishvi and Beriah.

Their sister was SERAH daughter of ASHER. (Serah Bat Asher)

THE LIST OF THOSE WHO AROSE AND LEFT EGYPT: Numbers 26:4 4 “Take a census of the men twenty years old or more, as the Lord commanded Moses.”

Numbers 26:44 The descendants of Asher by their clans were:

through Imnah, the Imnite clan;

through Ishvi, the Ishvite clan;

through Beriah, the Beriite clan;

45 and through the descendants of Beriah:

through Heber, the Heberite clan;

through Malkiel, the Malkielite clan.

46 Asher had a daughter named SERAH (bat Asher). 47 These were the clans of Asher; those numbered were 53,400.

*************

There is one name and one name only that appears on both lists, the one of those going down to Egypt and the ones coming up from Egypt; and she is SERAH bat ASHER.

“When Moses and Aaron came to the elders of Israel and performed the signs in their sight, the elders of Israel went to Serah bat Asher and said to her: ‘A certain man has come, and he has performed a set of miraculous signs [otot] before our very eyes.’ She said to them: ‘There is no significance to these signs.’ They said to her: ‘He said “I have taken note of you [pakod pakadeti et’chem]'” [Ex. 3:16]. She said to them: ‘He is the man who will redeem Israel from Egypt in the future, for so I heard from my father, peh-peh, ‘God will surely take note of you [pakod yifkod et’chem]…’ (Gen. 50:24). The people then believed in their God and in Moses, as it is said, ‘And the people believed when they heard that the Lord had taken note of the Israelites'” (Ex. 4:31) (Pirkei de-Rabbi Eliezer 48, my translation).”

Two extraordinary elderly women of Asher, one identified Moses as the promised one to deliver Israel from Egypt, and the other identified Yeshua as the Promised One to  bring redemption to Jerusalem.
Clearly this Yeshua did not bring redemption; The Destruction of Judaea and Jerusalem followed within a generation of His coming.  However, as Yeshua said, He came for the LOST SHEEP of Israel.  The Lost Tribes scattered throughout the world became idolaters, and assimilated into the various nations to which they were exiled.   In a sense, these Lost Israelites were scattered once more in Mitzraim; Egypt.  But this time they are scattered a Greater Egypt.  Yeshua’s disciples brought His Gospels to the four corners of the world.  Many became nominal Christians.  But the few, the remnant, were like rich soil.  The planted seed grew and there were always those who came up against the Truth that Churchianity was Counterfeit; Roman Counterfeit Church and its Sunday-keeping sisters.  In every generation there were those who were shown that Yeshua came to return the Lost to the Torah, not to end it!

Now, Two Millennia from Yeshua, and the State of Israel and its capital Jerusalem is a stumbling block, the nations, reel inebriated around it.  It is this now forming Global System that will be as Egypt.  It is from this Egypt that Yeshua’s return in Power and Glory, as Moshiah ben David, will redeem all of Israel, Joseph and his associated Tribes and Judah and her associated Tribes!
